Thanks to its many soil types, in Holland above Amsterdam you will find all landscape types of the Netherlands; from woods to dunes, from lakes to the sea and from agricultural clay soil to heather. But there is also room for new nature reserves, places where the nature is given the chance to develop on its own. A good example of this is De Kerf at Schoorl. Because the seawater is unrestricted at high tide, a completely new ecosystem is being created.
It is not without reason that the Wadden Sea is on the Unesco World Heritage list. Go walking on the tidal marshes with a guide and, with your feet in the Wad, discover the uniqueness of this beautiful piece of nature. There is a real chance of seeing seals, so take your binoculars with you!
In the Netherlands we just drink water from the tap. It is naturally purified in the water supply dunes surrounding Castricum. You can see how they work in the Visitor's Centre De Hoep in Bakkum. In Schoorl you can join various excursions with the forest ranger from Outdoor Centre De Schoorlse Duinen. A good way of discovering nature's beauty in Holland above Amsterdam.
De Beemster is very special and has gloriously withstood the tests of time: a UNESCO world heritage site accommodating another world heritage site as well, the Defence Line of Amsterdam, or, in Dutch, 'De Stelling van Amsterdam'.
