The farming village of Zuidermeer is located only fifteen minutes from the historical city centre of Hoorn. The peace and quiet of the farmland is immediately noticeable here. Make sure you take a look at De Anloup farmhouse museum owned by Annie and Teun Steur. They have furnished their traditional West Frisian farmhouse to give you a good idea of the life of a West Frisian farmer over the years. A pleasant addition is the delicious farmhouse apple pie that they bake to go with a cup of coffee.
You will notice that Zuidermeer is a real West Frisian village at festivities and parties in particular. For example, many a Zuidermeer inhabitant marks the date of the local fair in their agenda months in advance. The hexathlon (which is held every five years) is also a source of hilarity when the small village is divided into six areas and the villagers challenge one another in a sporting battle.
