Heemskerk could be called the municipality of castles. No less than six castles stood here, but only Slot Assumburg and Marquette castle have managed to survive the ravages of time. Nowadays, Chateau Marquette forms an estate with a hotel and it is possible to enjoy luxury dining in the castle. From Slot Assumburg, where the Stay Okay hostel is now located, in the twenty-first century it's also possible to visit the castle gardens, a refreshing symmetrical baroque garden dating from 1700. The gardens are well maintained and you'll find a style garden, a vegetable and herb garden, a rose garden and an orchard.
In addition to a glimpse inside one of the castles, the beach at Heemskerk is also highly recommended. Cycling or even on foot - the beach at Heemskerk is very easy to reach. The distance from the village centre to the beach access road is no more than five kilometres. Motorised traffic is not permitted and the beach is characterised as a real family beach. Sun, sea, wind: you'll unwind completely here. To enjoy a drink and a snack go to beach pavilion De Vrijheit. Would you also like to swim on a cloudy day? Then escape to indoor pool De Waterrakkers!
