During the heydays of Krommenie a great deal of activity went on here - flour, oil, cocoa - and the inhabitants were called ‘gladoren’ or slick ears. Wormerveer is still known for its lively trade. But from this beautiful town, located beside the waters of the Zaan, walking and cycling in the neighbouring Guisveld nature reserve is enjoyable. This fenland meadow area, sandwiched between Westzaan, Zaandijk and Wormerveer, is a typical Dutch polder with its reeds. Follow the lovely Frans Marspad or Riettoppad hiking routes. Or keep on walking until you reach the Zaanse Schans open-air museum. And real cycling fanatics? They keep on cycling until they get to Amsterdam. What could be nicer than bumping over the centuries-old canalside streets?
