From Amsterdam, you can be in Wormer in under fifteen minutes. A thousand year old town magnificently situated beside the wide water of the Zaan. Walk along the quay, relax and drink a cup of coffee on the terrace. Once, like the rest of the Zaan region, Wormer was an industrious area and the sails of some sixty-six windmills turned here daily (De Koker is the only surviving windmill). The many listed warehouses beside the water are reminders of that glorious age.
What makes Wormer absolutely unique is the neighbouring Jisper and Wormerveld nature reserve. This happens to be the largest area of uninterrupted fenland meadows in Europe! The area is teeming with grassland birds. From De Poelboerderij Visitor Centre travel by electric boat beside the reeds and fenland islands. Various walking and cycling trips are also available. Hire a canoe in the marina and paddle straight into the expansive nature reserve. Use the canoe network junctions, which take you past the most beautiful spots. Did you know that the cows that graze here are transported by boat?
