In the midst of green pastures and near the Markermeer is Wijdenes (pronounced in local dialect as ‘Woidenes’). A quaint little place with slightly over a thousand inhabitants. The historic centre consists of houses and traditional stolp farmhouses that are built in the unique and typical West Frisian style. The polder at Wijdenes was drained in the past by two windmills - the Great Mill and the Small Mill - referred to by locals as 'the little mills'. The oldest mill was built in 1514!
Wijdenes is located near the Markermeer, which is a wonderful place to be on a summer's day. Recreation boats regularly tie up in the former fishing harbour. Enjoy a walk along the Zuiderdijk and marvel at the panoramic view.
