Westerland lies at the tip of the former island of Wieringen. This stunning peninsula is located between the Waddenzee and Amstelmeer. The unique thing about this village is that is was constructed in the nineteenth century by building houses against the lateral moraines that were left after the Ice Age. The surrounding green fields are beside the water, which makes the island feeling even stronger. The Amstelmeer is the ultimate spot to follow surfing lessons, due to the stiff breeze and shallow bottom.
Westerland is located at the highest point of Wieringen (thirteen metres above sea level) and the annual Boerenlandfair is held precisely on this highest point. A motley collection of stalls bursting with brocante and curios, additionally featuring demonstrations, old timers and tractors, singing and dancing and even High Tea. In short, the close-knit village atmosphere is probably shown in its best light here. From Westerland you can easily have a day out on Texel or one of the other enchanting Wadden islands.
