Look out from Volendam and admire the glorious IJsselmeer. On the water, old tjalks, clippers and smacks float fraternally beside modern yachts. When you turn round and see the picturesque houses and streets, you'll feel transported back to bygone days. Walk over the dike with its many shops, restaurants and terraces and eat fresh fish. Those who think that Volendam is only able to impress foreign tourists are selling themselves short. The fishing town with its charmingly built houses is a must-see, and certainly if you live in the Netherlands. The harbour packed with fishing boats, old smacks and pleasure cruisers is a sight to behold.Â
Maze
Behind the dike is the Maze: narrow little streets without a well-defined pattern are guaranteed to provide an impressive walk. You don't need much imagination to feel as if you've gone over hundred years back in time. The village has been immortalised by many famous painters and praised as the pearl of the Zuiderzee. Yes, it is a hotspot for tourists: rightly so. Vollendam is best discovered on foot, by bike or by hiring a Freemover!
Palingsound
A new addition is the virtual museum Experience Volendam, where you can experience the illustrious history in the most modern way. Enjoy a holographic show and brave the wild waves of the Zuiderzee with the Oculus Rift dating from 1916. Above all, be sure to visit Volendams Museum, Uniek Volendam or the Palingsound Museum, which presents a 100-year retrospective of music history in Volendam. Sports lovers can do a lap in Waterdam swimming pool or go bowling in De Zedde. Are you looking for a lovely souvenir for a day well spent in Volendam? Then don't forget to have a photo taken in traditional costume!
