Velsen-Noord, originally a lagoon area and formed by sand bars and lagoons, offers a breath of sea air. So whoever visits this place is automatically drawn to the beach. While in the past wealthy Amsterdam merchants built their substantial estates, nowadays surfers and kitesurfers occupy the coastline. The beach has always been a part of life here. Enjoy a spectacular walk along the three kilometres of sea pier.
European walking route
The early birds among us should not miss a visit to the fish auctions at IJmuiden, where the rough and dynamic world of the fish trade is still very much alive. Did you know that the E9 European walking route runs straight through Velsen-Noord? No? This walking route, part of which is also called the North Sea Trail, runs from Sagres in Portugal and north along the coast to Hamburg, following the coast from the Baltic to the Baltic states. The exact length of the route is still a mystery. But walkers who are ready for an adventurous challenge can start out in Velsen-Noord.
