The granary of Amsterdam That is what Purmerland and its fertile peatlands was once called. It was Rembrandt who painted the Lord of Purmerland (Frans Banning Cocq) illuminated in centre of the Night Watch. The many fenland reclamations caused subsidence that resulted in less building, but despite this the village never completely lost its allure. City dwellers from Amsterdam have recently been discovering this quietly situated village and building large properties here.
The Green Area of Purmerland is located in Lower Holland. Cycling or walking along the old fenland fields, dikes and reeds, as well as a visit to Purmerbos recreation area is an absolute must. The closest cycling network junction is 14 and from there you can follow the Veenweide Wormer Route. Alternatively, hike along the Bos- en Dijk Route, Twisk Route or Hekken Route. There is also a lovely, 5-kilometre canoe route that has various entry points.
