The name already says it: the village of Obdam is built on a dam. This former fishing village was founded around 1100 in an extremely wet fen area, which from time to time was a lake. Moreover, the inhabitants of Obdam were the first who built a cross drive in the area to protect themselves from the sea.
Most beautiful church in North Holland
The glory of yesteryear can be found at the characteristic train station in Obdam, and a number of stately buildings in the centre, such as the Sint-Victor church that in 2008 was voted ‘Most Beautiful Church in North Holland’. The hollow post mill (1632) at the Braken, just outside the village centre, is also worth visiting. On a summer's day, outdoor pool Buitenmeere is a wonderful place to swim. A great experience is the Obdam bike race that is organised each year in July. The Obdam traditional fair takes place a month later, when all the villagers gather for a sociable party and children have fun in the swing ride.
Oh yes: don't forget to visit Tuinatelier en Kwekerij De Morgen, with an extremely wide range of plants!
