You can still see them in a few places in Krommenie: traditional green houses featuring Zaan style wood architecture. The church also has an equally unique green painted tower. You will find this old-fashioned village style in the northern region of Krommenie in particular. And when you leave Krommenie - located between Amsterdam and the North Sea coast - you will immediately find yourself in the middle of the polder!
Enjoy the most beautiful walks through these green fenland meadowlands (also called De Krommeniedijk) until you reach the banks of the Alkmaardermeer. Here you will find one of the 42 forts of the impressive nineteenth-century Defence Line of Amsterdam, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't forget to take a look at De Woudaap windmill, which was the setting for the books in the Dutch Kameleon series.
