Once, over six hundred windmills turned their sails in the Zaan district, to which Koog aan de Zaan also belongs. No other region in Europe existed (in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) where so many companies were based. From weavers and starch factories to sawmills, shipyards and cattle breeders: you could literally find everything on the Zaan. The open-air museum De Zaanse Schans brings part of that history to life: here you can stroll between the windmills, wooden houses and workshops. Walk past the warehouse where clogs are made or enjoy the aroma of fresh bread at the bakery museum. Also not to be missed: the cheese dairy and the tin works.
You'll find plenty of bed & breakfasts in the beautiful village of Koog aan Zaan. Traditional green wooden houses also predominate here. Some are beautifully situated beside the water. With a view of the windmills in the distance. Koog aan Zaan also offers all the good things of modern life. This includes an indoor swimming pool with slides, whirlpools, steam baths, a toddler pool and a therapy pool. Yes, leave those Dutch water workers to it.
