Etersheim is actually a sunken village. The largest part was once swallowed by the Zuiderzee. Fortunately, an entirely new village was built inside the dike beside the magnificent Markermeer. The central church is now a bed & breakfast. Enjoy cycling endlessly along the banks of the Markermeer, where a network of cycle paths runs. The neighbouring village of Schardam has a lovely little harbour!

The Dik Trom school
Just outside the village in Oosthuizen, visit the tiny school featured in the Dik Trom books where author C. Joh Kieviet was a teacher between 1883 and 1902. The school only has one classroom - just as it did in the past. The old school desks, original stove, clogs under the coat rack and nostalgic blackboards will make you feel as if you have returned to days long gone, when naughty little Dik Trom experienced so many adventures here.
Tip! Just outside the village you will find the Etersheim Braakmolen, an authentic polder mill that now serves as a visitor centre that is open to visitors at weekends and during the summer.
