Long ago, Abbekerk laid beside the sea. They were harsh times, ridden with fear of the sea and storms. Nowadays, the friendly village shelters safely behind the spine of the West Frisian Circular Dike, built by the hands of West Frisian Farmers who were tired of the sea. The very same dike now makes the landscape around the village perfect for a cycling trip. Peddle through the green fields with the occasional traditional farmhouse to the neighbouring village of Twisk with its conservation area or make your way ten kilometres further to historical Medemblik.
If you are hot when you return from your cycling adventure then take a dip in De Spetter outdoor pool, where the younger village locals also enjoy themselves. If you love camping then find a farm campsite here, where you can pitch your tent in the orchard before you watch the sun set behind the cherry trees. Another day like this tomorrow?
