A village fit for a museum, that's Aartswoud. Once a community full of fishermen, but after the arrival of the nearby West Frisian Circular Dike that winds its way through the landscape like a green caterpillar, more agricultural. Take your bike or hiking boots and explore the typical West Frisian landscape. Follow the winding dikes and cycle paths through the green countryside past the sheep, cows and traditional farmhouses.
Boerentrots
Pitch your tent between the trees in the orchard at the campsite on the farm in the village. Follow the Boerentrots cycle ride from the campsite past all kinds of traditional farms in the environment and learn about the farming life. Alternatively, stay the night in a hotel house at Restinn, where you can completely unwind.
Cows in the showcase
At the Cattle Museum, there are cows standing in the showcase. Both literally and figuratively. This is a living museum where many endangered old Dutch cattle breeds are guarded from extinction by pure breeding. The ladies stand cosily together buttock to buttock, enjoying the perfect care they are given by the ten employees of the care farm where the Cattle Museum is housed.
