Zee Aquarium Bergen aan Zee
The 44 aquaria at the Sea aquarium can be split into 4 zones. They are divided according to the natural habitat of the inhabitants.
The cold zone
This includes aquaria with fish from the North Sea and northerly, cold seas.
The temperate zone
Here you will find sea dwellers from the Mediterranean Sea and
Atlantic OceanThe tropical zone
The inhabitants of these seas love warmer water and are to be found in tropical seas.
This zone is distinct from the other zones as it does not concern a sea but a river area.
The water in the aquaria is, of course, extremely important for the fish that have to live in it. But seawater is not just water with some salt in it so fresh seawater is collected straight from the sea. This is done with tankers that transport seawater from Zeeland and then use pumps to deliver the water from the North Sea right to our door.
The water is then filtered and cooled or warmed, depending on the zone in which it is to be used.
There are thousands of inhabitants and 230 varieties in the aquaria. Besides this, we also have to think about the different life forms: for example squid, lobsters, crabs, herring, rays, sharks, piranhas, anemones and also single-celled organisms, plankton and krill that is used to feed the other fish
