Vismarkt
The Vismarkt is one of the smallest streets in Hoorn. The street is located between the Appelhaven, Vijzelstraat and the Nieuwendam. The street is also partly on the water of the Appelhaven through a widening. The harbor runs around the island of Venidse.
Except for Vismarkt 4, all buildings are protected to some extent, number 2 is a national monument and number 8 is a municipal monument. The other properties are defining properties.
The current Fish Market is named after the daily market in Hoorn where fish was sold. This happened until 1508 on the Roode Steen. The Vismarkt consists of the street, with nine houses attached to it, and a bulge in the former Appelhaven. This piece was laid out in 1560, making the market twice as large.
In 1742 the Vismarkt got one of the two city pumps; the other pump was on the Breed.
The street remained in use as a fish market until 1912, complete with a fish auction. The fish auction was moved that year to a building next to the Main Tower.
