Winter Fever is the exhibition about winters in the past, about hardship and ice fun; about snowing in and winter parties; about skating on natural ice and working under harsh conditions.
What do drifting ice cream, straw in your underwear, ice flowers on the windows and sleigh rides have to do with each other? Exactly: they all belong to those brilliant white, but at the same time cruel and icy cold winters of the past. Winters of scarcity and discomfort, but also of sleigh rides and skating competitions. Winters of ice floe jumping, but also of the risk of getting snowed in; of ice fun and hardships.
In the Winter Fever exhibition you will not only find old skates, sleds, cool winter stories and images of the frozen Zuiderzee, but you also step into a real winter landscape yourself. Can you hear the ice sing and crack? And do you see those snowbound houses? The ice flowers are thick on the windows. Also admire the lighthouse of Marken - the 'Horse of Marken' - which sends out real light signals and is surrounded by drifting ice just like in a real winter. Experience the winter fun of the past for yourself and go ice floe jumping and throwing snowballs. Or would you rather participate in a prick sledding or ice skating competition?
Are these 'real' winters over for good now that we are dealing with climate change? Come to the Zuiderzee Museum and experience a 'real' winter again!
